For who

Covered by a public health insurance plan

This decides what we ask next: residents travelling abroad get emergency medical outside Canada, visitors get temporary medical inside Canada — two different products.

Destination

Single trips price by length; annual multi-trip by per-trip cap (8/15/30 days). Unstable pre-existing conditions flag manual underwriting.

Three questions decide a travel premium

Single trip or annual multi-trip, what medical limit, and whether pre-existing conditions are covered. Get those three right and the price follows — the cheapest plan is the one that pays when something goes wrong.

What drives your travel premium

  • Age — rising steadily from 65, roughly 1.3–1.5× per five-year band. There is no cliff at 65.
  • Destination — the USA is the most expensive band by a wide margin, then worldwide incl. USA, then worldwide excl. USA.
  • Trip length and per-trip cap — annual plans price on the longest single trip (8 / 15 / 30 days), not on how often you fly.
  • Medical limit — $100k is the super visa minimum; $500k+ matters for US hospital stays.
  • Pre-existing condition stability — the clause that explains most declined claims, usually a 90–180 day stability period.

What a travel policy must include

  • Emergency medical and hospital, with the exclusions read carefully — this is the part that can bankrupt a family.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption, ideally with a cancel-for-any-reason upgrade on non-refundable trips.
  • Baggage and delay, which is usually cheap to add and pays quickly.
  • Rental car damage — check your credit card first; buying twice is the most common waste in travel insurance.

Three ways to spend less on travel cover

Annual multi-trip from the third trip

At 65, a 14-day US single trip runs $82–101; three of them match a 15-day annual plan. If you travel once a year, single-trip is cheaper.

Buy the family plan, not two singles

A family plan covers two adults and dependent children for roughly the price of one and a half adult policies.

Do not pay for a $0 deductible

Going from $0 to $250 usually saves 5–10% of the premium, and in an emergency you will not be negotiating a $250 bill.

Travel insurance questions

How much is travel insurance for a 7-day US trip?

Around $20–36 for a healthy 35-year-old and $41–53 at 65, measured against GMS, TuGo and Medavie 2026 quotes. Annual multi-trip plans run $150–360.

How much cover does a super visa need?

At least $100k of emergency medical cover, valid for one year from entry. At 65 that is roughly $2,400–3,200 a year, and whether stable chronic conditions are included swings the price 10–25%.

Can I buy cover with a chronic condition?

Yes, but choose a plan that includes stable pre-existing conditions and confirm the stability period. A cheaper plan without that clause will decline any claim related to the condition.

Does my credit card already cover travel?

Usually only trip cancellation, delay and rental car damage at low limits, and only when the trip was paid with that card. Emergency medical, the expensive part, is almost never included.
