2026 average insurance cost by province

ProvinceAuto / yearHome / yearMarket structure & 2026 driver
BC$1,800–2,200$1,500–2,200Public basic (ICBC) plus private optional. Highest wildfire and flood exposure; 2024 insured catastrophe losses in Canada reached $9.4B (IBC).
ON$1,600–2,400$1,200–2,000Fully private market. Auto up about 11.8% year over year; the 44-city average benchmark is $2,132 (MyChoice 2026).
AB$1,500–2,000$1,300–1,800Fully private. Fastest auto inflation in Canada at about +21.3% year over year; home insurance CPI up 9.07% (StatCan).
SK$1,850–2,000$1,260–2,100Two-tier: public SGI Auto Fund basic + private Auto Pak extension. The auto figure above is the all-in cost — roughly $1,400 basic, plus a typical extension ($292–300), the $68 registration fee and 6% PST. Each layer is still quoted separately: a public basic rate is not comparable to a private-market premium.
MB$1,300–2,000$1,200–2,000Single public system (MPI Autopac). MPI files one province-wide rate, so movement is smaller than in private markets. The range above runs from the ~$1,300 province average to the top of the published Winnipeg full-coverage band ($2,000) — and that public rate is not directly comparable to a private-market premium.

Rebuild costs have risen about 69.4% since 2020 (StatCan construction cost index) — that is why sum insured, not market value, is the number to check before you compare home quotes.

Basis: InsurVibe engine rate pack SIM-2026.10 plus 2026 public industry data (StatCan construction cost and CPI, IBC catastrophe report, MyChoice 2026 Ontario city quotes, AAIRB 2026 Alberta rating tool, ICBC Basic Tariff, SGI Auto Fund, MPI Autopac). Ranges assume a common profile — clean 35-year-old driver, $400k home, $1,000 deductible. SK auto is an all-in cost (public SGI Auto Fund basic + a typical private Auto Pak extension + the $68 registration fee + 6% PST) matching the Saskatchewan registration certificate and two real Auto Pak renewals. MB auto spans the MPI Autopac province-wide average (~$1,300) to the top of the published Winnipeg full-coverage band. SK and MB home figures are converted with province factors because those markets publish no private-market average.

How to pay less for insurance in Canada

Raise your deductible

Going from $500 to $2,500 typically cuts 5–10%. Only do it if you could actually cover that amount after a loss.

Bundle home and auto

Most carriers discount multi-policy households by 5–15%. Compare the bundle price against two separate best quotes before you commit.

Shop before every renewal

Renewal pricing follows the market, not your loyalty — long-standing clients often pay more than new ones. Three to four weeks before the renewal date is the right window.

Protect your claims-free discount

A claims-free record usually reduces the premium every year. A small claim can cost more in lost discount than it pays out — run the math before you report it.

Auto: winter tires, mileage, telematics

Winter tires, accurate annual mileage and usage-based (telematics) programs are the three easiest discounts in Ontario, Alberta and BC. Declaring a shorter commute than you drive can void coverage.

Home: insure the rebuild, add sewer backup

Set the sum insured from rebuild cost, not market value, and add sewer backup and overland water where the municipality floods. Most water claims are declined because one of those two endorsements was missing.

Frequently asked questions

What information do I need to compare quotes in Canada?

It depends on the product: auto needs the vehicle, year, licence history and annual mileage; home needs the address, year built and sum insured; life needs age, sex, smoking status, coverage and term. No documents to upload and no credit check.

Does a quote really take three minutes?

The first screen gives you a free range in about 30 seconds; carrier-by-carrier detail usually takes under three minutes with contact information. You can stop after the range — no email required for it.

Will comparing quotes affect my credit score?

No. We do not run a credit check to quote. If an insurer later asks for a soft credit-based check during underwriting, it will be disclosed and authorized separately.

I am a newcomer or an international student — can I get a quote?

Yes. A study or work permit, a G2 / Class 7 licence and a local address are enough to start. Some carriers price newcomers specifically, and a few require a minimum local driving history — the comparison shows both.

Is the cheapest quote always the best one?

No. Check the sum insured, the deductible, the exclusions and the endorsements (sewer backup, overland water, earthquake, loss of use). Saving 10% while losing one endorsement usually costs more at claim time.

When should I compare before a renewal?

Three to four weeks ahead. Most policies or carriers require 15–30 days notice to stop an automatic renewal, and that window still leaves time to negotiate a better price with your current insurer.

How is this different from going straight to an insurer?

You enter your details once and see several carriers side by side, instead of filling in the same form four or five times. The policy is still issued by the insurer or a licensed broker, at the carrier’s filed rate — we do not add a markup to the premium.
