Auto insurance in Canada, province by province

The same car and the same driver can cost twice as much in Brampton as in Ottawa, and a public system (ICBC, SGI, MPI) is not comparable to a private-market premium. Compare inside your own province before you judge a price.

What drives your auto premium

  • Province and city — ICBC territory, Ontario’s 44-city risk table, Alberta’s 22-carrier average.
  • Driving experience and age — the price curve is U-shaped: youngest and oldest drivers pay most.
  • Vehicle — repair cost, theft rate and safety rating. A luxury trim can cost 30% more than the base model.
  • Claims and tickets — at-fault claims and convictions stay on your record for about six years in most provinces.
  • Liability limit and deductible — Ontario’s legal minimum is $200k, but $1M–$2M is the practical floor once you own assets.

Coverage you should actually have

  • Third-party liability of $1M–$2M — the cheapest line item that protects everything you own.
  • Collision and comprehensive for a financed or leased car; on an older paid-off car, run the math against its value.
  • Direct compensation (DCPD) in Ontario, and uninsured/underinsured motorist cover — the part that pays when the other driver has no insurance.

Four ways to cut your auto premium

Winter tires

Most Ontario and Alberta carriers discount 5–10% with proof of winter tires fitted in the qualifying window.

Raise the deductible

$1,000 to $2,000 on collision is usually worth 8–12% and is far easier to absorb than most people assume.

Usage-based pricing

Low-annual-mileage and telematics programs suit people who drive under 12,000 km a year; check whether the data also supports a rate increase.

Bundle with home or tenant

A multi-policy discount usually beats a standalone auto rebate — but verify the bundle against two separate best quotes first.

Auto insurance questions

How much does a G2 driver pay in Ontario?

A G2 driver with no record commonly sees $3,500–6,000 a year, versus roughly $1,900 for a clean 35-year-old. Adding a licensed parent as an occasional driver is the single biggest lever.

Do I lose my claims-free discount if I switch insurers?

No. Ask your current insurer for a claims experience letter and the new carrier will normally credit the same number of claims-free years.

Should I report a small claim?

Often not. Compare the payout with the discount you would lose over the next 3–6 years; a $700 repair can cost more than $1,500 in future premiums.

Can I quote with a BC address and an Ontario licence?

Yes, but the premium follows the vehicle’s principal location, not the licence. Moving province means re-registering the vehicle, and in BC that means ICBC basic plus optional cover.
