Équité's 2024 Ontario data shows Lexus RX 2016-2021 with 9.40% theft rate (2,083 of 22,192) and Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2015-2021 at 4.20%. Both numbers are the highest of any region. A read of the GTA and surrounding area luxury SUV theft pattern and what it means for 2026 insurance.
Ontario is the highest-theft province for luxury vehicles in Équité Association’s 2024 release, and the difference is material. Lexus RX Series 2016-2021 in Ontario posted 9.40% (2,083 thefts on 22,192 insured) — the highest vehicle-region combination in the entire 2024 release. Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2015-2021 sits at 4.20% (264 thefts on 6,291 insured). Both numbers reflect organized crime activity concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions, with re-VIN and overseas export as the dominant mechanism. For Ontario drivers shopping for high-end SUVs, the 2026 insurance market reflects this directly through higher deductibles and mandatory anti-theft commitments.
Lexus RX Series 2016-2021 in Ontario posted 2,083 reported thefts in 2024 against 22,192 insured vehicles, a 9.40% rate. That is the highest vehicle-region combination in Équité's 2024 release. Nationally, the same generation posts 6.40%, and in any other region the rate is below 1%. The Ontario rate is the outlier, and the absolute count (2,083) is also the highest in the Ontario top 10 list.
The mechanism is organized crime. The Greater Toronto Area is the operational base for re-VIN networks that target specific high-end SUVs and ship them to overseas markets. The Lexus RX 2016-2021 is the dominant target because it combines a recognizable luxury brand, a high overseas resale value, and a keyless entry system that allows quick theft. The carrier response has been to require ULC 338 certified anti-theft systems on these vehicles for new policies in 2026, and to increase comprehensive deductibles to $1,000 or $1,500.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2015-2021 in Ontario posted 264 reported thefts on 6,291 insured, a 4.20% rate. The vehicle is in the Ontario top 10 at #6, well behind the Lexus RX and Honda CR-V by absolute count, but the rate is high enough that carriers writing this vehicle in Ontario have substantially tightened underwriting. The Range Rover Sport is a flagship re-VIN target because of its premium positioning.
Toyota Highlander 2013-2019 in Ontario at 1.70% (575 thefts on 33,610 insured) is the third luxury-adjacent signal. The Highlander is not strictly a luxury vehicle, but its theft rate in Ontario is more than double the national rate of 1.20%, and the high count makes it material for insurance pricing.
Four actions. First, if you own a Lexus RX 2016-2021 in Ontario, install a ULC 338 certified anti-theft system before your next renewal. Second, if you own a Range Rover Sport 2015-2021 in Ontario, also install a GPS tracking device registered with the carrier. Third, at renewal, ask your insurer to itemize the rating change — the 2024 data is in the rate filing, and the Ontario-specific surcharge should be transparent. Fourth, compare quotes from at least three Ontario-active carriers on the same vehicle. The spread between the most and least accommodating carrier on a Lexus RX 2018 can easily be 25%, and the right comparison will save you materially.
Without an anti-theft system, expect a comprehensive premium in the $1,200 to $2,000 range, which is roughly 30% to 50% above what the same driver would pay on a comparable sedan. With a ULC 338 certified system, the anti-theft discount can offset roughly half the increase. The Lexus RX is the most-targeted luxury SUV in Ontario, and the carrier response in 2026 is materially more strict than 2024. Compare at least three Ontario-active carriers.
Comprehensive coverage on a 2020 Range Rover Sport in Ontario will typically carry a $1,000 to $1,500 deductible and require a ULC 338 certified anti-theft system. The 4.20% theft rate is a direct input to the rate filing. Most carriers will also require a GPS tracking device registered with the carrier. Budget for total annual premium in the $3,500 to $5,500 range for a typical driver. The vehicle is fine to buy, but the insurance is a real cost line.
The organized crime networks that target Lexus RX are concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area. Quebec has its own theft pattern (Honda CR-V, Acura RDX) but the Lexus RX network is GTA-centric. The Lexus RX 2016-2021 in Quebec does not even appear in the Quebec top 10, while in Ontario it is #1 by theft count. The regional concentration of organized crime networks is what drives the difference, and the rate is the direct input to the rate filing.
