Term life insurance is the most popular and cost-effective life insurance in Canada. You choose a coverage amount and a term; if you pass away during the term, your family receives the full benefit tax-free.
Term life provides a fixed death benefit for a set period — typically 10, 20, 25 or 30 years. It has no savings or investment component, which is exactly why it is affordable.
If you outlive the term, coverage simply ends unless you renew or convert. Most families buy it to replace income and protect a mortgage during their working years.
Your monthly premium is driven by age, sex, smoking status, coverage amount and term length. Age is the biggest factor — every year you wait makes coverage more expensive.
Smokers pay roughly 2-3x more than non-smokers. Women usually pay less because of longer life expectancy. Higher coverage amounts and longer terms cost more overall, but the per-$1,000 rate drops.
A common rule is 10-12x annual income, or enough to clear debts, fund education and replace income for the years your family depends on you. Use our DIME calculator for a personalized number.
Match the term to your obligation: a 25-year mortgage pairs naturally with a 20-25 year term; young families often pick 20-30 years to cover the child-raising years.
Common add-ons include total disability waiver of premium, accidental death benefit, guaranteed insurability and child term. Riders raise the premium, so buy them deliberately.
Many carriers also let you convert term to permanent insurance without a medical exam during the conversion window — useful if your health changes.
You can buy directly online (PolicyMe-style), through a bank, or through an independent licensed advisor. An advisor can compare multiple carriers and get you the best rate class for your health profile.
The application usually involves a short medical questionnaire and sometimes a phone interview or paramedical exam. Quotes are instant; binding takes days to weeks.
Term is cheaper and fits most income-protection needs; permanent builds cash value but costs 5-10x more. Most advisors suggest term first, permanent only if you have estate or lifelong obligations.
Yes, most policies are renewable, but the new premium is based on your current age and can be much higher. Converting to a longer-term or permanent policy during the conversion window is often smarter.
Smokers typically pay 2-3x non-smokers. Quitting and staying smoke-free for 12 months can qualify you for non-smoker rates on a new application.
