Conduire du Canada vers les États-Unis : quelle assurance

ICBC couvre déjà la responsabilité US — achetez le médical voyage; repères de prix, location et règles MSP

Driving from Vancouver to the USA: the insurance answer is a combination, not a single policy. Your car is mostly covered already; the real gap is medical.

1. Your car: already covered (mostly)

BC drivers are covered by ICBC Basic Autoplan, and its third-party liability applies in both Canada and the United States. You do not need to buy a new auto policy for the trip.

Optional coverages are a different story: collision, comprehensive, rental-vehicle damage and higher liability limits are purchased separately. If you want $2M+ liability, upgrade your optional policy — the annual delta is usually modest.

📊 ICBC Basic third-party liability: valid in Canada and the US; optional liability upgrade runs a small annual delta.

2. The real gap: travel medical

MSP does not cover medical care outside Canada. A US hospital visit can easily run $50,000-$100,000+, and Canadian travel medical insurance is priced at a fraction of that risk.

For a 7-day US trip, a healthy 35-year-old typically pays $20-35 for $5M medical-only coverage across the six carriers we compare; comprehensive (medical + cancellation/baggage/assistance) runs about $40-54. At 65 the same trip is roughly $41-51 medical-only and $60-70 comprehensive — the senior loading is far smaller than most guides suggest.

📊 35yo · 7 days · US · $5M: medical ≈$20-35; comprehensive ≈$40-54. 65yo: medical ≈$41-51; comprehensive ≈$60-70.

3. Rental cars and roadside

ICBC Basic covers your liability when driving most rental vehicles in the US, but damage to the rental car itself is optional coverage. Check your policy, your credit card benefits and the rental desk before signing.

Roadside assistance such as BCAA is a separate membership service, not insurance — useful for long drives, but don’t mistake it for medical or liability coverage.

4. The 183-day MSP rule

MSP normally requires living in BC for at least 6 months plus one day per calendar year. Snowbirds and long US stays can lose eligibility — check with the BC Ministry of Health before planning extended trips.

Buy travel insurance before departure, declare pre-existing conditions honestly, and keep the 24/7 emergency line with your policy card.

Questions fréquentes

Do I need to tell ICBC before driving to the US?+

No notification is required for a regular trip — your Basic Autoplan applies automatically in Canada and the US. For long stays or commercial use, confirm with your insurer.

Is a US policy required at the border?+

No. Canadian insurance is accepted for Canadian-registered vehicles; US border officials may ask for proof of insurance, so carry your Autoplan documents.

What is the cheapest way to cover this trip?+

Keep your ICBC Basic as-is and buy single-trip travel medical insurance. If you already have an annual multi-trip plan, it likely covers US destinations — just confirm the per-trip day limit.
